The Nansen Refugee Award

Fridtjof Nansen

Since 1954, The Nansen Refugee Award (formerly known as the Nansen Medal), has been given each year by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to an individual or organization for "outstanding services in supporting refugee causes." The Award is named after Fridtjof Nansen, a Nobel Peace Prize winning Norwegian arctic explorer who was apointed in 1921 by the League of Nations as the first High Commissioner for Refugees.
