Hans-Peter Dürr is Director of the Max-Planck-Institute of Physics in Germany and a passionate social change activist concerned with many causes such as campaigning against nuclear weapons and energy, and working for economic, environmental and Third World questions. In 1986 he proposed a World Peace Initiative to solve environmental problems, and achieve peace and social justice. This later became the Global Challenges Network, which along with Professor Dürr, received the Right Livelihood Award in 1987.
