When the Nobel Foundation turned down Jakob von Uexkull's offer to provide the funding to create two additional prizes -- one in ecology and another for helping the world's poor -- he decided to create his own prize. He sold his stamp collection and set up the Right Livelihood Awards. For over 25 years this 'Alternative Nobel Prize' has honored the efforts of others who's achievements for a better world have been overlooked by the Nobel Prizes. Von Uexkull's latest venture is to create a World Future Council of the planet's elders, pioneers and youth leaders to help advise world's governemnts about the best course to take to help create a more peaceful, just and sustainable future for us all.
