a child, "Bucky" spent a lot of time in Maine, where he used to bring things in
from the woods to design and construct his own little tools and inventions. He
grew up with a natural curiosity about how things operate and the materials that
made things work. His curiosity was such that formal education bored him - so
much so that he was thrown out of Harvard University twice! After a number of
ups and downs in his life, ending with the tragedy of losing his young daughter
to pneumonia, he determined that he would start "an experiment, to find what a
single individual can contribute to changing the world and benefiting all humanity."
His experiment lasted a life time. Buckminster Fuller is now known as one of the
most enlightened people of the last century. He created the geodesic dome, designed
and constructed many numbers of environmentally compatible buildings and homes,
and envisioned our planet as a spaceship traveling through the universe. The concept
of "Spaceship Earth" and all of his other innovations, inventions, writings, and
buildings make Buckminster Fuller one of the most fascinating people of all time.
